As of February, 2012, there were over $1.1 million apps available on the app store and have been downloaded over 50 billion times. Many of those apps are deleted the next day and probably won’t make it to home screens. Why? Any idea can become an app, but you don’t want to just develop an app, you want to make sure it’s an effective and relevant one.
Read our steps below to get some ideas on how to plan, design, and develop a killer app.
1. App Design
Whether you have a bundled or unbundled app, the design phase really is the groundwork of any app. Since your app’s design influences other aspects of the process, you want to make sure you cover four aspects which are the core idea, a plan, a layout, and functionality (this is where you want to make sure the app meets the expectations of its users).
2. Your Core Idea
Ignoring the needs of your customers could result in unhappy and very frustrated app users. It’s important to see the big picture and brainstorm your idea. When you brainstorm, it’s important that you cover things such as writing down your ideas, mapping them out, and creating an outline.
3. Your Plan
Now it’s time to construct a plan for execution. This can be the longest and most expensive part of the process. Some of the things you want to consider in your plan is your budget, the needs of the users, features, and which mobile app platform you plan to use (iOS or Android). It’s important that you have a plan B or alternatives when planning an app because anything could go wrong.
4. Designing your Layout
This is how your app appears to its users. This is one of the reasons why app stores provide screenshots of apps. Some of the main factors you want to make sure you pay close attention to are clarity, consistency, functionality, navigation, whether or not it’s user-friendly, and the incorporation of your brand assets.
5. Functionality and Development
In this step, you need to make sure that all of your app’s features function well and are inter-connected. In this process, you will usually be focusing on are taking your time, catching bugs, and fixing them.
The first thing you need to do is focus on using the right marketing strategies. The next thing you’ll want to focus on is marketing to the correct audience. To do this, you need to consider important aspects such as age, lifestyle, and attitude. You can try things such as polling and checking out other apps in your niche to see what users in different target audiences are saying in their reviews.
Now that you’ve figured out your target audience, it’s time to present it in a way that will appeal to your market. You can choose the strategy and media channels that you want to use.
