If you are suffering Heart burn or acid reflux, rather than rushing to the local pharmacy to get chemical antacids or making phone calls to your GP you may want to grab a leaf of aloe vera plant from your garden and squeeze it. In 2 tablespoon of this, add a pinch of baking soda and take up to three times a day. Acid reflux is because of Pitta imbalance in Ayurvedic Medicine according to Dr. Pradeep Neupane from Vibrant Ayurveda Wellness Center, Brisbane. Aloevera gel has very cooling properties which is helpful to balance the heating effects of stomach acid and baking soda helps to neutralize the acid. If this is not enough, one cup of papaya juice with 1 teaspoon organic sugar and 2 pinches cardamom can give additional cooling and acid neutralizing effect balancing the aggravated Pitta.

On the other hand, if you are suffering from indigestion or feeling bloated and gassy, you may want to avoid too much of heavy, oily, dense food and emotional eating. Wrong food combination such as having nuts with any food, milk and dairy together, raw fruits with cooked food can also give gas and bloating. According to Dr.Neupane, this is because due to aggravation of Vata in the colon.  Chronic constipation can also lead to Vata imbalance. Hence, avoiding these causes will be very beneficial for improving digestion for long term. As the treatment for this condition, chewing 1 slice of ginger with a pinch of salt & a few drops of lime juice before half an hour of food increases the strength of digestive enzymes in the stomach. Also, taking ¼ cup of fresh onion juice with ½ tsp honey and ½ tsp black pepper after half an hour of each meal will help to break food down the food and help balance aggravated Vata.

If you are having sluggish or dry bowel, taking 1 cup boiled milk with a pinch of cardamom, nutmeg and 1 tsp ghee at bed time will help lubricate the colon and helps improve bowel movement.

For diarrhea sufferers having cooked mushy 2 apples or 1 chopped banana with 1 tsp ghee, a pinch of cardamom and nutmeg will help soothe the aggravated
